Circular economy and refurbished technology: how to give your devices a second life

We are used to a fairly simple model: we buy a product, use it for a while and, when it no longer meets our needs or we want to replace it, we buy another one. The problem appears when millions of devices follow exactly the same path.

The circular economy proposes a different approach: keeping products, components and materials in use for as long as possible through reuse, repair, refurbishment and, when they can no longer be used, recycling.

In computing, this approach makes a lot of sense. A computer that a company no longer needs may still be perfectly suitable for studying, working from home, managing a business or carrying out office tasks for years.

What is the circular economy?

The circular economy is a model of production and consumption that aims to make use of existing products and materials for longer.

Instead of the traditional linear model of “extract, manufacture, use and dispose”, the circular economy aims to close the loop through actions such as:

• Sharing products.
• Reusing them.
• Repairing them.
• Refurbishing them.
• Redistributing them.
• Recycling their materials when they can no longer be used.

The idea is simple: before manufacturing something new from scratch, it is worth asking whether what already exists can continue to be useful.

What does the circular economy have to do with technology?

A great deal.

Computers, laptops, smartphones, monitors and other devices contain numerous materials and components that require resources and energy to manufacture.

When a functional device is replaced too early, we are not only failing to make full use of the product itself: we are also wasting the materials and resources that were used to manufacture it.

That is why extending the useful life of electronic devices is one way to move towards a more circular technology model. The European Environment Agency has also highlighted that increasing the lifespan of electronic products can significantly reduce their environmental impact.

From the linear model to the circular model

The difference can be understood easily by comparing both models:

In practice, not everything can be reused indefinitely. But the longer we can keep a product working before it becomes waste, the better use we make of the resources that were already used to manufacture it.

Why is extending the life of electronic devices important?

Waste electrical and electronic equipment is one of the waste streams requiring the greatest attention in Europe. As well as containing substances that must be managed correctly, electronic devices also contain valuable materials and critical raw materials that can be recovered and reused.

That is why, before thinking only about recycling, there is an even more interesting question: can the device still be used?

If the answer is yes, reusing or refurbishing it allows the value of the complete product to be preserved for longer.

Reuse before recycling

Recycling is important, but it should not always be the first option.

Imagine a business laptop that still works correctly but is replaced because a company is renewing its entire IT fleet.

That computer may still have years of useful life ahead of it.

If it can be inspected, cleaned, prepared and used again, refurbishing it preserves far more value than immediately dismantling it to recover materials.

The European Commission also includes reuse, repair and refurbishment among the measures needed to move towards a more circular economy for devices such as mobile phones, tablets and laptops.

The role of refurbished products in the circular economy

Refurbished products are a very clear example of the circular economy applied to technology.

A device that no longer meets the needs of its original owner can go through an inspection and preparation process before starting a new stage with another user.

This can happen with:

• Desktop computers.
• Laptops.
• Workstations.
• Monitors.
• Smartphones and tablets.
• Other IT equipment and accessories.

This does not mean that every old device should be kept in use at all costs. The key is to check whether it still provides the performance required for the new use it will receive.

A computer does not stop being useful just because a newer one exists

This is probably one of the most important ideas when talking about technology and sustainability.

The arrival of a new generation of processors does not automatically make the computer you already have useless.

For browsing, working with documents, managing email, studying, making video calls or using business applications, many devices from previous generations can still offer perfectly suitable performance.

That is why, when buying refurbished equipment, the important question is not simply “how old is it?”, but:

• Which processor does it have?
• How much RAM does it have?
• Does it have an SSD?
• Is it compatible with the software I need?
• Does it have the connections I will use?
• How long do I expect to use it?

Circular economy does not mean buying any used product

Buying second-hand can form part of more circular consumption, but it is not exactly the same as buying refurbished technology.

A refurbished product goes through an inspection and preparation process before being put back on sale.

This is particularly important in computing, where elements such as storage, memory, connectivity, system operation and the general condition of the equipment need to be checked.

Circularity works best when we not only extend the life of products, but do so in a way that ensures they remain useful, functional and suitable for the new user.

Does buying refurbished help the environment?

It can contribute to more sustainable technology consumption by extending the useful life of existing equipment and delaying the point at which it becomes waste.

It would not be accurate to claim that every refurbished purchase has exactly the same environmental impact or that it is always automatically the most sustainable option. It depends on the product, its lifespan, the refurbishment process, transport and many other factors.

However, there is a solid idea behind it: using electronic products for longer and supporting their repair, reuse and refurbishment helps reduce the need to replace them prematurely.

How can an individual take part in the circular economy?

There is no need to change all our habits overnight. Some fairly simple decisions can help:

1. Do not replace devices that still meet your needs. The existence of a new model does not mean you need to upgrade.
2. Repair when it makes sense. A specific fault does not always mean the entire device needs to be replaced.
3. Buy refurbished. Especially when equipment from previous generations meets your needs perfectly well.
4. Buy according to your actual use. Choosing more performance than you need also means paying for resources you may never use.
5. Pass on devices you no longer use. If they still work, they may be useful to someone else.
6. Recycle properly when they can no longer be reused. Electronic waste needs to be managed correctly.

Circular economy and savings can go hand in hand

One of the advantages of the circular model is that sustainability and savings do not have to be opposing goals.

A user may prefer a refurbished computer because they want to spend less and, at the same time, that decision allows an existing device to continue being used.

For many people, that is where the real advantage lies: getting the performance they need without necessarily paying for a brand-new device.

This can be particularly interesting for students, families, freelancers, businesses or users who need several computer workstations.

The circular economy at Segundamanopc

At Segundamanopc, we believe that many IT devices can remain useful long after the end of their first stage of use.

Professional IT equipment is a good example. Companies and organisations regularly replace their devices because their needs change, even though some of that hardware may still offer suitable performance for other users.

Refurbishment makes it possible to put that equipment back on the market and give it a second life.

At Segundamanopc you can find refurbished laptops, desktop computers, workstations, monitors, accessories and gaming PCs, as well as free shipping, returns of up to 30 days and different financing options according to the applicable conditions.

The circular economy is not about giving up technology, but about using it more intelligently: making better use of what already exists, repairing when possible and avoiding turning equipment into waste while it can still remain useful.
