RAM shortage: what is happening

RAM is one of the fundamental components of any computer. It directly affects the system’s ability to work with multiple applications, handle large files, run games, use virtual machines or perform more demanding professional tasks.

At certain times, the memory market can experience significant pressure on availability and pricing. This happens when demand increases while manufacturers allocate part of their capacity to other types of memory that are more profitable or strategically important.

In recent years, the growth of data centres and artificial intelligence has added considerable pressure to the industry. The production of memory for servers and high-performance systems competes for manufacturing resources with the DRAM used in desktop computers, laptops and workstations.

The result can be higher prices, lower availability of certain modules and greater differences between DDR4, DDR5 and professional memory.

Why can a RAM shortage happen?

The memory market does not work like a market where production can simply be increased overnight when demand rises.

DRAM production requires extremely advanced semiconductor fabs, very high levels of investment and manufacturing processes that cannot be expanded from one day to the next.

In addition, major manufacturers have to divide their capacity between different types of products:

• DDR memory for computers.
• Memory for servers.
• LPDDR for mobile devices and laptops.
• HBM for artificial intelligence accelerators.
• Professional and specialised memory.

When one of these markets grows rapidly, it can absorb a larger share of the available manufacturing capacity.

This does not necessarily mean that factories have stopped producing memory for computers, but it can mean that supply grows more slowly than demand.

Artificial intelligence is increasing memory demand

When people talk about the growth of artificial intelligence, they usually think first about graphics cards and accelerators used in large data centres.

However, these systems also require enormous amounts of memory.

Specialised accelerators use HBM, or High Bandwidth Memory, which is designed to provide extremely high bandwidth.

But the infrastructure around those accelerators also relies on traditional servers with large amounts of DRAM.

While a home computer may use 16 or 32 GB of RAM, a workstation may include 64, 128 or 256 GB. In professional servers, capacities can be much higher still.

When those requirements are multiplied across thousands of servers, the effect on the memory market becomes significant.

DDR5 and rising demand

DDR5 has gradually become the memory standard used by many modern platforms.

As often happens with a new generation, prices were high during its first years. Later, increased production helped bring module prices down and made larger capacities more affordable.

However, stronger global DRAM demand can slow that trend and lead to new price increases.

The impact is particularly noticeable in high-memory configurations.

• 16 GB may be enough for office work and home use.
• 32 GB provides plenty of headroom for multitasking and gaming.
• 64 GB can make sense for content creation and some professional applications.
• 128 GB or more is common in certain workstations, servers and virtualisation environments.

The more memory a system requires, the greater the effect that an increase in price per gigabyte has on the total cost.

DDR4 can become more expensive even though it is an older technology

One of the more unusual effects in the memory market appears when one generation begins to be replaced by another.

It may seem logical that DDR4 should keep getting cheaper simply because it is older than DDR5.

But when manufacturers gradually reduce production in order to dedicate capacity to newer technologies, the available supply also falls.

At the same time, millions of fully functional computers, servers and workstations still depend on DDR4.

If demand remains while production declines, older memory can stop becoming cheaper and may even increase in price.

This can make upgrading certain older computers require more consideration of alternative options than it did a few years ago.

How RAM prices affect the cost of a computer

RAM represents only part of the total cost of a computer, but its importance increases considerably when large capacities are required.

A small difference in the price of a single module may matter very little in a computer with 16 GB, but it can become much more significant when 64, 128 GB or more needs to be installed.

Refurbished RAM as an alternative

Buying new memory is not the only way to upgrade a computer.

There are also refurbished, tested or professionally sourced RAM modules that can be reused if they work correctly and are compatible with the system.

RAM is a particularly interesting component for reuse because it contains no moving parts and can continue working for many years.

This makes it possible to recover modules from business computers, workstations or servers that have been replaced and reuse them in other systems.

The key is that the modules are properly tested and sold with clear information about their specifications and conditions.

Advantages of refurbished RAM

When new memory becomes more expensive or certain models start to become harder to find, refurbished memory can broaden the available options.

• Price. It may allow you to reach the required capacity at a lower cost.
• Availability. It can make it easier to access memory generations whose new production is being reduced.
• Upgrading existing systems. It allows you to improve a computer without replacing components that still work correctly.
• Large capacities. It can be particularly interesting for workstations and servers.
• Reuse. It keeps components in use when they may still have a long working life ahead.

As with any refurbished product, this does not mean that every module is automatically a good purchase. Compatibility, functionality, price and seller conditions still need to be checked.

Refurbished DDR4 and systems that still have plenty of useful life

The refurbished market can be particularly useful for DDR4 systems.

There are many professional computers that still provide perfectly adequate performance but need a memory upgrade.

For example, a system with 8 or 16 GB may still remain suitable for work for years if upgraded to 32 GB.

In that case, replacing the entire computer would mean replacing the processor, motherboard, storage and other components that may still meet the user’s needs perfectly well.

Finding compatible refurbished DDR4 modules can make it possible to carry out only the upgrade that is actually needed.

This can be particularly useful when the new supply of certain modules begins to shrink.

Refurbished RAM for workstations and servers

In professional systems, memory can account for a significant share of the total cost.

A workstation may use 64, 128, 256 GB or even more memory depending on the model and the workloads it was designed for.

These systems may also use specific types of memory such as:

• ECC.
• Registered DIMM.
• Server memory.
• Multi-channel configurations.

Modules recovered from business infrastructure can be reused in other compatible machines once their functionality has been properly checked.

When dealing with large capacities, this can significantly reduce the cost of an upgrade.

Compatibility is essential

Buying RAM is not simply a matter of choosing a module with a large number of gigabytes.

The memory must be compatible with the motherboard, processor and system configuration.

Before buying, it is worth checking:

• Generation: DDR3, DDR4 or DDR5.
• Form factor: DIMM or SO-DIMM.
• Maximum capacity: each system supports a specific amount.
• Capacity per module: some motherboards have specific limits.
• Speed: it must be compatible with the platform.
• Number of slots: there may be free slots or all slots may already be occupied.
• ECC or non-ECC: particularly important in workstations and servers.
• Registered or unbuffered: they are not interchangeable in every system.

With professional equipment, it is advisable to check the exact computer or motherboard model before selecting memory.

Upgrading RAM can extend the life of a computer

Insufficient memory is one of the reasons why a computer can start to feel slow even though its processor still has enough performance.

When the system runs out of available RAM, it begins using storage as virtual memory.

Although modern SSDs are very fast, they are still considerably slower than RAM.

In these situations, a memory upgrade can significantly improve the user experience and delay the need to buy a new computer.

This is particularly common when:

• Many browser tabs are used.
• Several applications run at the same time.
• Photos or videos are edited.
• Virtual machines are used.
• Large projects are being worked on.
• The computer has only 8 GB of RAM.

When is it better to replace the computer?

Upgrading memory does not solve every problem.

If the processor, storage, connectivity or compatibility of the system are also outdated, spending too much money on memory may not be the best decision.

Before upgrading, it is worth considering:

• Processor age.
• Storage type.
• Operating system compatibility.
• Maximum RAM capacity.
• Future upgrade options.
• Cost of the required memory.
• Overall system performance.

In some cases, adding more RAM will be enough. In others, replacing the entire computer may be more worthwhile.

Buying a refurbished computer with the RAM you need

There is also a middle ground between upgrading a very old computer and buying a completely new one.

A refurbished computer may already include a suitable memory configuration and offer a more modern platform without necessarily requiring the cost of a new device.

This can be particularly interesting when several components need to be upgraded at the same time.

The professional market also includes workstations designed to support large amounts of memory and make future upgrades easier.

That is why it is worth comparing not only the price of the modules, but the total cost of maintaining, upgrading or replacing the system.

Do not buy more RAM than you need

When prices rise, there can be a temptation to buy memory before it becomes even more expensive.

But installing a huge amount of RAM that your applications never use does not automatically improve performance.

As a general guide:

• 16 GB is enough for many home users, students and office systems.
• 32 GB provides plenty of headroom for multitasking, gaming and more demanding workloads.
• 64 GB may be required for professional editing, virtual machines and certain technical applications.
• 128 GB or more is mainly aimed at workstations, servers and specialised workloads.

The best investment is to install the amount of memory the system actually needs while keeping room for future upgrades whenever possible.

A market shaped by supply and demand

RAM pricing has historically been cyclical.

Periods of excess production can lead to sharp price declines, while high demand or reduced capacity can have the opposite effect.

The expansion of data centres and artificial intelligence applications is adding another source of demand to that market.

That is why it is difficult to know exactly when memory prices will fall or how much RAM will cost several months from now.

The most reasonable strategy remains to assess each purchase according to actual need, compatibility and the alternatives available.
